Baptism
Begin a Beautiful Journey of Faith
Baptism—also called Christening—is a joyful moment when a person is welcomed into God’s family with water and prayer. It marks the beginning of a life-long journey of faith. In Baptism, we celebrate God’s grace: through faith in Jesus Christ and the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are adopted as God’s children and become citizens of His Kingdom.
What is Baptism?
Baptism is a holy rite where water signifies a new beginning in faith. It involves responding to the Gospel or ‘good news’ of Jesus Christ in four key ways:
- The time has come: recognise that the coming of Jesus was the defining moment of history and the fulfillment of God’s plan – NOW is the time to respond
- The Kingdom of God is near: the spiritual reign of Jesus has arrived – His rule pushes back darkness and sets us free
- Repent: turn away from all that separates you from God and others
- Believe: trust in Jesus to save you, and make Him your Lord – obey Him and become His follower.
Your sins will be forgiven and washed away. You receive the Holy Spirit giving you power to live as God’s beloved adopted child.
For Children
Christening is a powerful sign of God’s promise to welcome each child into the community of the Church. Parents who bring their children for Baptism make a commitment to help them grow in faith, with the hope that one day the child will confirm this faith for themselves. You don’t need to have been baptised yourself to bring your child for Christening
Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child
A Thanksgiving Service is a beautiful and meaningful occasion where family and friends gather to give thanks for your child, ask for God’s blessing, and pray for your family. It is a good option If you are not yet ready for your child to be baptised or to make promises on their behalf. You can always choose Baptism at a later stage.
Who can be Baptised?
Anyone of any age can be baptised – babies, children, teenagers or adults. If you were baptised as a child, but you wish to mark an adult step of faith, you may choose to have a Renewal of Baptism.
